The Importance of Automated Systems in Preventing Cross-Contamination in Pasteurizers

Pasteurization is a critical process in the dairy industry, ensuring that milk and other dairy products are safe for consumption by eliminating harmful bacteria. However, the process can be compromised if cross-contamination occurs. Cross-contamination can happen in various ways, including malfunctioning equipment, inadequate pasteurization, and improper handling.

To address these challenges, Goose Automation has designed automated systems that prioritize process experience and quality requirements. Our systems are designed to address the following potential sources of cross-contamination:

  1. Raw Milk Overflow: Our systems prevent the overflow of raw milk from the balance tank into the pasteurized milk lines by monitoring and controlling the balance tank level and the operation of flow diversion valves (FDVs).

  2. Holding Coil Contamination: Our systems ensure that the holding coil is adequately pasteurized during every diversion, preventing the contamination of pasteurized milk.

  3. Re-Infection: Our systems prevent re-infection through back growth of microorganisms from the return line by implementing proper sanitation and cleaning procedures.

  4. PHE Plate and Gasket Integrity: Our systems monitor the integrity of PHE plates and gaskets, detecting and addressing pinholes and hairline cracks that can lead to contamination.

  5. Vacuum Creation: Our systems prevent raw milk from being sucked into the pasteurized line due to vacuum creation in the downstream cooling and regeneration zone during diversion.

  6. FDV Interlocking: Our systems use interlocking FDVs to divert inadequately pasteurized milk and inadequately cooled milk, preventing contamination of downstream sections.

  7. Plate and Gasket Inspection: Our systems include regular inspection and maintenance of heat exchange plates and gaskets to prevent contamination of pasteurized milk by raw milk or heat exchanging media.

By implementing Goose Automation's automated systems, dairy plants can ensure the safety and quality of their pasteurized milk products. Our systems are designed with the utmost care to address potential sources of cross-contamination, providing peace of mind to dairy producers and consumers alike.
